The fair began in 1972 on historic Custer Avenue. Each year since then 500 artists, craftspeople, antique dealers, restauranteurs, entertainers and the members of the Main Street Station Shopping District get together with 70,000 attendees for this award-winning Northshore tradition.

Evanston Festival Theatre, Inc. was founded in 1972.
In addition to producing Custer's Last Stand, the region's largest fine arts and crafts fair, it also has undertaken the restoration of the Main St. Metra train station in Evanston, IL. This newly rennovated, historical train station provides excellent commuter services and functions as a one-of-a-kind cultural center christened The Evanston Arts Depot.
